Abstract a networked wireless amr automatic meter reading system based on wireless sensor networks and zigbee technology is presented in this paper for solving the problems existed in the existing meter reading system. The system is a combination of zigbee and gsm technology. Consumer node is composed of electric meter arm processor liquid crystal display lcd and a zigbee module operated at 2 4 ghz ism band.

Zigbee based electric meter reading system.

Presenting the remote wireless electric meter reading system this aims at resolving the shortcomings of the technology of the traditional electric meter reading combining the characteristics of the zigbee technology and ieee802 15 4 standard. In this propose system zigbee module will be attached to the meter by using interface board and the data collector will be connected to the central computer by using gsm. This technology mainly saves utility providers the expense of periodic trips to each physical location to read a meter. An amr system based on cc2420 is designed.

The smart meter based on zigbee is not limited to just meter reading but it has many applications. Base station is composed of a computer with zigbee module. The system is suitable with malaysian environment which was already implemented gsm based amr in lpc. The hardware implementation was designed and then analyzed the use cases for electric meter.

In this propose system zigbee module will be attached to the meter by using interface board and the data collector will be connected to. The zigbee devices are extremely limited in resources including processing memory and power short operating range. Today electric meter water meter gas meter are available based on zigbee technology. Gsm based automatic meter reading system is a succor.

In the present work zigbee based automatic meter reading amr unit is designed to continuously monitor the meter reading and to shut down the power supply remotely whenever the consumer fails to pay the bill. We will take example of zigbee display which works with zigbee smart meter meant to read electricity consumption. Amr eliminates any possibility of electricity theft. Meter reading is wirelessly transmitted to base station.
